What's inside

What is inside the workbook

Six sheets. Send each slip with the statutory bonus letter.

Sheet 1

Settings

₹21,000, ₹7,000, your minimum wage, your rate and the one-half rule in blue cells. The rate cell refuses anything outside 8.33% to 20%.

Sheet 2

Wage Builder

Turns pay components into wages as the Code defines them, the same base as the per-day salary sheet, so you test ₹21,000 on the right figure.

Sheet 3

Bonus Register

One row per employee and one column per month, with each month's base worked out beside it. A month above the line turns red and drops out.

Sheet 4

Bonus Slip

Enter an employee code and print the slip: days worked, months that count, the base, the rate, deductions and the amount credited.

The register starts in April

Bonus runs on twelve months of wages. Attendo (formerly Petpooja Payroll) keeps each month's salary and attendance on record.

Why this matters

Why a bonus slip needs the working

Because the slip is where an employee checks you. If the figure on it cannot be traced back to wages, months and a rate, it invites the question, and from 2026 the arithmetic behind it has moved.

Bonus is now paid under Chapter IV of the Code on Wages, 2019, and the limits notified on 25-Aug-2026 kept the old numbers: ₹21,000 to qualify, and ₹7,000 or the minimum wage as the base. What changed is the wage those limits are tested on, the one a Code-ready salary sheet already builds.

That wage is basic, dearness allowance and retaining allowance, plus any excluded pay above half of total pay. So ₹21,000 is not a gross figure. A supervisor at a retail chain on ₹22,000 gross with a low basic can be owed bonus, and the wage builder shows why.

Above ₹7,000, the base is the higher of ₹7,000 and the minimum wage for the role. In a factory, a hospital or a store the minimum wage is often the higher figure, and a sheet that stops at ₹7,000 underpays.

Most private employers are in the State sphere, where on our reading the same figures apply with the State's minimum wage. The register follows the payout checklist step for step, so the slip, the letter and the bank credit all show one number.

Three things the workbook gets right

Each one is where a hand-built sheet usually goes wrong.

  • The wage. ₹21,000 is tested on Code wages, built in the wage builder, not on gross or on basic alone.
  • The month. A month above ₹21,000 drops out and the rest still count, a reading of 'per mensem' the workbook names as one.
  • The year. Only an advance or customary bonus paid in the same year is deducted; one paid this November belongs to next year.

Key stats

Three numbers behind every slip

₹21,000 a month, on Code wages

Every employee drawing wages not exceeding twenty-one thousand rupees a month is paid bonus. Notified for the Central sphere on 25-Aug-2026, deemed in force from 21-Nov-2025.

Source: S.O. 4711(E), Gazette of India, 25-Aug-2026, under s.26(1)
₹7,000 or the minimum wage, if higher

Where wages exceed seven thousand rupees, bonus is calculated as if they were ₹7,000 or the minimum wage, whichever is higher; on our reading, a State-sphere employer uses its own State's.

Source: S.O. 4710(E), Gazette of India, 25-Aug-2026, under s.26(2)
8.33% to 20%, at least ₹100

The minimum is eight and one-third per cent of wages earned, or one hundred rupees if higher, owed even without allocable surplus; up to twenty per cent where the surplus requires it.

Common mistakes

6 Bonus Slip Mistakes Indian Employers Make

Testing ₹21,000 on gross

The line is on Code wages. On a low basic, gross can be well above ₹21,000 while Code wages are under it, and that employee is owed bonus.

Stopping at ₹7,000

Above ₹7,000 the base is the higher of ₹7,000 and the minimum wage. Where the minimum wage is higher, it is the base.

Dropping a whole year for one high month

On the month-by-month reading, a month above ₹21,000 drops out and the rest still count.

Reducing part-year staff twice

Bonus is a percentage of wages actually earned, so a part year already gives less. Section 27 reduces only the ₹100 floor.

Deducting next year's advance

Section 37 deducts only an advance or customary bonus paid in the same year. A Diwali payment this November belongs to 2026-27.

Fixing the rate at 8.33% without the accounts

Where the allocable surplus exceeds the total minimum bonus, section 26(3) binds you to pay more. Ask your CA before you set the rate.

FAQ

Common questions

Is this bonus slip workbook really free? +
Yes, completely. No card and no trial. The form asks for your name, work email, phone and city, then the Excel file downloads straight away. The Attendo team may follow up about payroll software, and you are free to say no thanks.
How is statutory bonus calculated in 2026? +
For each month, take the employee's wages as the Code on Wages defines them. If they are above ₹21,000 that month does not count. If they are above ₹7,000, use ₹7,000 or the minimum wage for the role, whichever is higher; otherwise use the wages. Add the months and apply your rate: at least 8.33%, or ₹100 if that is higher, and up to 20% where your allocable surplus requires it. The workbook does every step in formulas.
Is the ₹21,000 limit tested on gross salary? +
No. It is tested on wages as section 2(y) of the Code on Wages defines them: basic, dearness allowance and retaining allowance, plus any excluded pay above half of total pay. Someone on ₹22,000 gross with a low basic can have Code wages of ₹11,000 and be owed bonus. The workbook's wage builder shows that case.
What if an employee crossed ₹21,000 during the year? +
The workbook counts each month on its own: months at ₹21,000 or less count, months above it do not. That is a reading of 'per mensem' in section 26(1), not settled law, and the workbook says so. Where the reading matters for someone, paying is the lower-risk course.
Can we pay the bonus in cash with the slip? +
No. Section 39(1) of the Code on Wages requires bonus to be credited to the employee's bank account, within eight months of the close of the accounting year, so by 30-Nov-2026 for 2025-26. The slip records the credit; it does not replace it.
