What are Working Days?

Working days (also called business days) are the days in a period when employees are expected to work. In India, a standard working month typically has 26 working days after excluding 4 Sundays. Some organizations also exclude Saturdays, bringing the count to around 22 days per month.

Knowing the exact number of working days in a period is essential for payroll processing, project planning, contract deadlines, and compliance calculations. Different industries follow different weekly off patterns, which is why a configurable working days calculator is useful for HR and operations teams.

  • A standard Indian working month has 26 days (excluding Sundays) or 22 days (excluding weekends)
  • Public holidays vary by state and are subtracted separately from working days
  • Working days directly affect salary calculation for daily-wage and hourly employees

How to Calculate Working Days Between Two Dates

The working days formula counts all calendar days between the start and end date, then subtracts the non-working days.

Working Days = Calendar Days - Sundays - Saturdays (if excluded) - Public Holidays

Step 1: Count total calendar days between start and end date (inclusive)

Step 2: Subtract all Sundays that fall within the range

Step 3: Subtract Saturdays if your organization follows a 5-day week

Step 4: Subtract public holidays that fall on working days (not already on a weekend)

Working Days Calculation Example

Let's calculate working days for August 2026, assuming a 5-day work week with 2 public holidays.

Period: 1 August 2026 to 31 August 2026

Calendar Days: 31

Sundays: 5 (Aug 2, 9, 16, 23, 30)

Saturdays: 4 (Aug 1, 8, 15, 22, 29) [excluded for 5-day week]

Public Holidays: 2 (Independence Day Aug 15 falls on Saturday, so only 1 effective holiday to subtract)

Working Days: 31 - 5 - 4 - 1 = 21 days

Why Working Days Matter for Payroll

  • Salary calculation: For daily-wage and hourly employees, the number of working days directly determines the monthly salary amount
  • Leave deductions: Leave without pay is calculated based on working days, not calendar days. Getting this wrong means incorrect deductions
  • Overtime computation: Overtime is only counted on working days. Knowing the exact count prevents disputes
  • Project deadlines: Business timelines are measured in working days, not calendar days. Accurate counting prevents missed deadlines
  • Statutory compliance: Indian labour codes reference working days for notice periods, settlement timelines, and gratuity calculation (15/26 formula uses 26 working days)

How to Use This Working Days Calculator

  • Step 1: Select the start date of the period you want to count
  • Step 2: Select the end date (the calculator counts both dates as part of the range)
  • Step 3: Choose whether to exclude Saturdays (5-day week) or include them (6-day week)
  • Step 4: Enter the number of public holidays falling within the period

The calculator instantly shows working days, calendar days, weekends, and weeks in the period.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about working days calculation.

How many working days are in a month in India? +
For a 6-day work week (Monday to Saturday), a typical month has 25 to 27 working days. For a 5-day work week (Monday to Friday), it is 20 to 23 working days. The exact count depends on how weekends fall and the number of public holidays in that month.
Are Saturdays counted as working days in India? +
It depends on the organization. Corporate offices and IT companies typically follow a 5-day week where Saturdays are off. Manufacturing units, retail stores, and some SMEs follow a 6-day week where Saturdays are working days. Some organizations have alternate Saturdays off.
How do you calculate working days between two dates? +
Count all calendar days between the two dates (inclusive). Subtract all Sundays. If the organization follows a 5-day week, also subtract Saturdays. Then subtract any public holidays that fall on working days. The remaining count is the number of working days.
What is the difference between working days and business days? +
In practice, they mean the same thing. Both refer to days when business operations run, excluding weekends and public holidays. The term "business days" is more common in banking and legal contexts, while "working days" is used more in HR and payroll.
How many working days are in a year in India? +
For a 6-day work week: approximately 300 to 305 working days (365 minus 52 Sundays minus 10 to 15 holidays). For a 5-day work week: approximately 248 to 252 working days (365 minus 104 weekends minus 10 to 15 holidays).
Do public holidays count as working days? +
No. Public holidays are non-working days. India has 3 national holidays (Republic Day, Independence Day, Gandhi Jayanti) that are mandatory for all establishments. In addition, each state declares 10 to 15 regional holidays. However, if a holiday falls on a Sunday, it may or may not result in a compensatory off depending on company policy.
Why is the 26-day month used in Indian payroll? +
The 26-day month is a standard used in Indian labour law for payroll calculations. It assumes a 6-day work week (30 calendar days minus 4 Sundays = 26 working days). This figure is used in gratuity calculation (15/26 formula), per-day salary computation, and leave encashment calculations.
How does this calculator handle leap years? +
The calculator handles leap years automatically. When you select dates in February of a leap year, it correctly accounts for 29 days instead of 28 and counts the weekends and working days accordingly.
